Parents and teachers from South Bend schools that could soon be closed or repurposed sounded off at a community meeting last night, pleading for the system to preserve neighborhood access to schools, along with programs they say can and should serve students across the district. South Bend schools are struggling to cope with continuing enrollment declines and the resulting loss of state funding that comes with it, plus the effect of tax caps on the budget. Many schools have far fewer students than they could handle.

The death toll in that big earthquake in Turkey and Syria now tops 15 thousand, as hope diminishes of finding people alive in the rubble of hundreds of buildings across southern Turkey and northwest Syria. At least three Americans are among the dead. Aid workers are struggling to reach victims in war-torn Syria.

At least one medical professional says that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin will be able to play NFL football again. Dr. Thom Mayeris the NFL Players Association medical director. The 24-year-old Hamlin went into cardiac arrest last month after making a tackle during a game in Cincinnati. He was discharged from the hospital a week later.

College basketball: Georgia Tech edged Notre Dame in Atlanta, 70-68. The 10th ranked Irish women host Pittsburgh tonight at 6 in Purcell Pavilion on Live 99-9.

In the Big Ten, Michigan over Nebraska in Ann Arbor, 93-72. Wisconsin won at Penn State, 79-74. Top ranked Purdue is at home tonight against Iowa, and Ohio State hosts Northwestern.

NBA: the Indiana Pacers lost at Miami, 116-111. Cleveland won at home over the Detroit Pistons, 113-85. The Chicago Bulls are at Brooklyn tonight.
