Bob Seger – Dave DiPaolo’s Deep Dive

Bob Seger is Rock and Roll, and Bob Seger is Michigan.

As a locally successful Detroit-area artist, he performed and recorded as Bob Seger and the Last Heard and Bob Seger System throughout the 1960s, breaking through with his first national hit and album in 1968. By the early 1970s, he had dropped the ‘System’ from his recordings and continued to strive for broader success with various other bands. In 1973, he put together the Silver Bullet Band, with a group of Detroit-area musicians, with whom he became most successful on the national level with the album Live Bullet (1976), recorded live with the Silver Bullet Band in 1975 at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. In 1976, he achieved a national breakout with the studio album Night Moves. On his studio albums, he also worked extensively with the Alabama-based Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, which appeared on several of Seger’s best-selling singles and albums.

Seger wrote and recorded songs that deal with love, women, and blue-collar themes from the heartland. His hit catalog includes “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man”, “Night Moves”, “Turn the Page”, “Still the Same”, “We’ve Got Tonight”, “Against the Wind”, “You’ll Accomp’ny Me”, “Shame on the Moon”, “Like a Rock”, and “Shakedown”, which was written for Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). Seger also co-wrote the Eagles’ number-one hit “Heartache Tonight”, and his recording of “Old Time Rock and Roll” was named one of the Songs of the Century in 2001.

Though Seger is known for his rock n’ roll sound, he’s actually a huge fan of Motown, R&B, and especially James Brown. In his hit song Night Moves, the song he humms from 1962 is actually the Ronettes’ Be My Baby.

And as you may have heard, the Palace of Auburn Hills was sold and will be demolished soon, but Bob Seger had the honor playing the final concert inside its’ walls to a sell out crowd of more than 17,000 people. It was his 17th show at the Palace, as well.

Bob Seger is currently finishing his final tour ever which will run through October of 2019. He is currently rocking hard and enjoying life at age 74.
