Terri Albers of Spectrum Health Lakeland for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Youth Mental Health First Aid 2.0

64% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment.

– Mental Health America

Spectrum Health Lakeland understands youth today are struggling with high levels of emotional distress from the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe our communities need First Aiders (like you) who are equipped to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and addiction issues, as well as care for ourselves.

The newly released Youth Mental Health First Aid 2.0 teaches adults how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth.  This 6 ½ -hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem – and help them connect to appropriate care.

All registered participants will need to complete a 2-hour, self-paced online course, and then attend a    4 ½ -hour, instructor-led (in-person) on Thursday, November 4, 2021, from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm.  The         in-person portion of the course will be held at The Consortium, 175 W. Main Street, Benton Harbor.

There is no charge for the course and registered participants will receive learning materials online.     This course is available to residents who live in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties.

What it covers:

Common signs and symptoms of mental illness in the age group (ages 6-18), including

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis
  • How to connect the person with help

NEW: Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.

The course will teach how to apply the ALGEE action plan: Assess for risk of suicide or harm; Listen non-judgmentally; Give reassurance and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; and Encourage self-help and other support strategies.
