President Biden is back in Poland today after an unannounced visit to Ukraine Monday. Biden says he wanted to show his support for Ukraine’s resistance to the year old Russian invasion. He took a ten hour train ride each way because it’s not safe to fly in the war zone, and the trip was not announced until he had left. Biden will address NATO allies today in Warsaw.

They call it a balanced calendar, but to a lot of parents it means year around school, and that’s what South Bend’s Empowerment Zone is considering. The Empowerment Zone consists of four west side elementary schools feeding Navarre Middle School, threatened by a possible state takeover if academics don’t improve sufficiently. The balanced calendar would reduce summer break to five weeks, and give students and teacher longer breaks during the school year, totaling the same number of instruction days the other schools have.

A first generation iPhone still sealed in its original box went for more than $63,000 at auction over the weekend. The original owner said it was a gift, but she never opened it since she had already gotten a new phone. Other first-generation iPhones have been reportedly sold at auction for more than $35,000. The eight-gigabyte phone originally sold for less than $600 when it was introduced in 2007, 15 years ago.

Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman Monday defended his handling of the hiring of an offensive coordinator, saying Utah’s Andy Ludwig was his first choice for the job before he decided to stay at Utah. Freeman introduced Irish tight ends coach Gerad Parker as the new offensive coordinator.

The Indianapolis Colts are finalizing a deal to bring in Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator under new coach Shane Steichen.

The Indiana Hoosiers are now number two in the latest AP women’s college basketball poll. Notre Dame holds at number ten this week. South Carolina remains number one.
