Notre Dame is planning a solar power generating field in a vacant field along State Route 933 just off the west side of the campus. It’s another step in the university’s push toward energy independence. Work is expected to begin this summer, and it should be operating in about two years. Notre Dame has set a goal of net-zero campus carbon emissions by 20-60.

The New York Times reports this morning that Chinese leader Xi Jinpeng will visit Russia and President Vladimir Putin next week, a visit that could have significant consequences for Russia’s war on Ukraine. This formal state visit will be Xi’s first trip to Russia since its invasion of Ukraine last year. Meanwhile, Poland is now promising fighter jets to Ukraine, in an effort to win further pledges of military support from other NATO members.

Ford is recalling more than a million cars over a brake fluid hose issue. The recall affects Ford Fusions and Lincoln MKZs sold between 2013 and 2018. The report estimates two percent of the one and a quarter million vehicles carry the defect. Owners will be sent information during April on what to do.

Day one of the NCAA basketball tournament saw a couple of big upsets, as two seed Arizona and 4 seed Virginia bowed out in first round games. The Big Ten went 3-and-2 yesterday, with losses by Illinois and Iowa, and wins by Maryland, Penn State, and Northwestern. Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State play first round games today.

Notre Dame women’s basketball opens tournament play this afternoon at Purcell Pavilion against Southern Utah. Game time is 3:30 on sister station Live 99-9. Indiana women’s basketball also opens NCAA play today.

NBA: the Indiana Pacers won at Milwaukee, 139-123. The Chicago Bulls host Minnesota tonight.

Hockey: the Chicago Blackhawks won at Nashville, 2-to-1.
