The Regional Development Authority and South Bend’s Redevelopment Commission are seeking about ten million dollars from developer Dave Matthews for failing to meet commitments to open a grocery store and pharmacy along with his new development on South Bend’s east bank. The agreement specified the two retail outlets as part of a ten story apartment complex, but after a couple of extensions, they say Matthews has failed to live up to the agreement. Matthews initially hoped Martin’s would fulfill the obligation, but they backed out after an ownership change.

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he’s optimistic about an upcoming meeting with President Biden on the debt ceiling. McCarthy told CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday he is confident he and the president will come to an agreement. McCarthy wants spending cuts in return for extending the debt ceiling. Biden has said the government should pay the bills it has already incurred without conditions.

Another big lottery jackpot is in play, with Powerball now over $600 million for tonight’s drawing. No winning ticket was sold for Saturday night’s drawing. The cash option would be over $300 million before taxes.

NFL playoffs: The Super Bowl in two weeks will pit the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles beat the injury-plagued San Francisco 49ers Sunday, 31-to-7. The Chiefs edged the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20.

The 7th ranked Notre Dame women lost Sunday afternoon at North Carolina State, 69-65. The Irish men won Saturday at home over Louisville, 76-62.

In the Big Ten, top ranked Purdue over Michigan State, 77-61. Michigan lost at Penn State, 83-61. On Saturday, Indiana over Ohio State, 86-70.

Notre Dame hockey won two games Friday and Saturday over Wisconsin, 5-to-3 and 3-to-1.
